Medical Physics is an applied science combining the fields of physics, bioengineering, and electronics. A Medical Physicist is responsible for monitoring and maintaining machines capable of delivering lethal doses of radiation in minutes. A Medical Physicists needs to be an active and creative problem solver, capable of evaluating situations and taking/ interpreting measurements accurately and efficiently. They are a primary consult for healthcare administrators, radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, radiologists and other physicians.
There are four avenues of specialty for a Medical Physicist: Radiation Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging, Nuclear Medical Physics, and Medical Health Physics. Each subfield has its own certification exam as each presents different challenges and focuses on different goals.
A Medical Physicist can pursue a career in the following areas:
- Clinical Service and Consultation
- Academic Research and Instruction
- Industrial Research and Development
- Vendor Applications/ Technical Support
